Services for carers of adults with a learning disability
Carers Support Merton and Merton Mencap are working together to provide services for carers of adults with a learning disability living in Merton. The two charities, which are both based in Mitcham, are using their resources to support carers by providing the following services:
- Home visits to carers
- A ‘drop-in support’ for carers to discuss any problems they are experiencing
- Monthly carers group outings
- The Carers Support Merton newsletter, which will now include a section edited by Merton Mencap specifically for carers of adults with a learning disability
- Support for the learning disability partnership board carers group
The service also includes providing Carers Act Assessments on referral from the local authority. Find out more about Carers Act Assessments here (this opens a window, see 1 below for content)
Merton Mencap’s Chief Executive, Andrew Whittington, feels this is an important development:
“For some time, we have been considering how to improve our services for carers of adults with a learning disability and we are delighted to be working with Carers Support Merton, who are committed to providing the best for carers. Our two organisations are working together to provide information, practical help and breaks from caring. We hope carers will feel more supported as a result’.
Carers Support Merton’s Chief Executive, Jennie Chapman, is also enthusiastic about the collaboration:
“I am delighted that the combined strengths of the two charities will give carers a streamlined service that brings together expertise in the fields of learning disabilities and caring. I look forward to a long and productive partnership with such a well respected charity as Merton Mencap for the benefit of local carers.”
The collaboration will begin from 1 April 2011.
